Professionalism

Ms. Shirk’s natural strengths are her confidence and professionalism. [She has] adjusted extremely well to all of the circumstances of teaching this marking period including the unprecedented online format and the transition to teaching from home. She was always flexible, willing to learn, and willing to shift her practices. She collaborated well with all staff and administration in matters related to teaching and students. She is personable and very easy to work with.

I value highly the practice of consistent professional development and reflection. As teachers, we are in a constant search for the best practices, the most effective methods, and the most innovative instruction. Particularly at this time, there is no one right way to conduct a classroom whether it be inside a school or remotely through a screen. The best practice, however, for a teacher is to continue that search through a personal initiative of growth. Engaging with literature and research, seeking out a vast knowledge of school, district, country, and national practices, and taking the time for self-reflection and evaluation are three elements of this professional development that I find to be imperative. It would be a disservice to the school, oneself, and their students to remain stagnant and distant from the possibility of continuous growth.

Ms. Shirk will certainly have great success as a teacher because of her reflective nature. She makes immediate changes when needed and consistently reflects on her successes and struggles. She is productively critical and continues to improve her connections to students so she can better shape her lessons for engagement and rigor.
