Teaching Global Competence & Digital Citizenship

Maintaining relevance, awareness, and agency;

In my two 12th grade English classes, I developed and assigned a project that addressed the idea of Global Competence: the importance of gaining an understanding and awareness of different cultures, countries, and individual experiences in order to widen one’s view of the world beyond their own life and community. In gaining global competence, I felt that an introduction to digital citizenship was appropriate not only considering the ways that the world is linked through news, media, and the internet, but also considering the digital platform that we have had to take with education during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Podcasts have become more commonly produced and listened to and are more or less a creative way to make a presentation. Through the use of a podcast project, students engaged in research, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning. All decisions made throughout the process were left to students. They chose their own topic, developed a style and manner to present it in, created titles and cover images, and produced exceptional and well-researched podcast episodes. Students who were comfortable with research were stretched with their technical and creative abilities. Those who prefer to take creative approaches had the obstacle of providing credible and thorough research.

Global Competence allows you to explore the different events that are occurring around the world and gain knowledge from it. I believe my final product is just one of the major issues that is currently going on in Afghanistan.

Grade 12

From the podcast process, I have gained better research methods and was able to make a better product by working with a partner. The Kite Runner taught me a lot about global competence from the differences the characters face between living in Afghanistan and the United States.

Grade 12

I learned that the process of making a podcast is difficult. Also, I enjoyed making a podcast. Making this podcast was important.

Grade 12

I gained the ability to understand information on something I didn’t have a true understanding for in the past. I also learned how to connect something that is fiction to information that is real and shows up in the world. This was important because it allowed me to get a feeling for what I might have to do when it comes to writing a research paper in college, it also prepares me for making sure that I can easily put information together in a concise way.

Grade 12

I learned how to be more open minded through the process. This was important because a lot of the time I just listen to what other people say but this project taught me to do a lot of research. Through this experience I learned more about how different countries handle different things and how much  freedom we actually do have here in America.
